Two of music’s more enlightened minds team up for one exciting new track. John Legend tapped Chance the Rapper to collaborate on “Penthouse Floor,” which appears on his forthcoming album Darkness and Light.

On one level, the empowering track is about rising above, but Legend seems to be aiming “Penthouse Floor” specifically to marginalized communities that have been held back in one way or another. “All this trouble in this here town/ All this s— going down/ When will they focus, on this?” he sings in the opening verse.

Chance comes in after the halfway mark. “New era, I’m in the penthouse, baby,” he sings before continuing his staccato-driven rap. “My folks downstairs still waiting in line/ They never been in these rooms, never stayed with these folks/ Never laughed at the news, never hated these jokes/ So as I fly in my suit in a group undercover/ Forcing a new smile, he tells me another/ What happened to the boy that climbed up the trunk?/ Then he pushed me off the top, and said ‘Jump, n—–, jump!”

The track marks one of three big collaborations Legend features on the album. Besides Chance, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard appears on the title track “Darkness and Light,” while Miguel appears on “Overload.” Darkness and Light arrives December 2nd.
