Red Hot Chili Peppers have released “We Turn Red,” the third single from their new album The Getaway, which comes out June 17. The song follows “Dark Necessities” and the title track in the campaign to promote the album before it drops.

Starting with an echoing beat redolent of Led Zeppelin’s “The Ocean,” “We Turn Red” quickly launches into full-on Chili Peppers mode, with a rubbery bass line, funk-fueled guitar and Anthony Kiedis’ half-rapped vocals. Then it shifts into a more reflective vibe with acoustic guitars, melodic crooning and soft, syncopated drumming.

Lyrically, Kiedis says he’s “serving up the stories of my mind,” free associating about going “fishing in New Orleans,” touching on politics with lines like “Mexico, you want my labor” and “give me all your sick and your tired.” And it wouldn’t be the Chili Peppers without a bit of Dr. Seuss-style nonsense: “We got large and we got small, we got a swimming pool and a cannon ball/ We turn red and we turn green, it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Kiedis is reportedly healthy again following an intestinal flu last month that forced the band to cancel its slot on the KROQ Weenie Roast and postpone a gig in California. On June 13 The Red Hot Chili Peppers will take part in James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” on The Late Late Show.
