Alicia Keys has released the music video for “In Common,” her first single in four years. The song will appear on her upcoming sixth studio album, which remains untitled for the moment.

The black and white video presents a blank canvas against which dancers create moving scenes. Whether alone or in pairs, the dancers bend, shift and contort to signify their intertwined relationships and how much they have “in common” with one another. Keys, meanwhile, stands on a fire escape, as she sings about the relationship at the song’s heart.

“This video is about celebrating our individuality, and how in the brilliance of our uniqueness, the magic of it all is at the core, we are all the same,” Keys said in a press release. “We want the same things. We all want to experience love, the freedom to be our truest selves, to love whomever we want and to be accepted and celebrated for all of our nuances and so called imperfections that make us, us.”

She added,  “We all have our issues, our challenges. We are all kind of messed up and that’s all right. In fact, that’s what helps us understand each other. To me, that is what’s so beautiful.”

It’s been some time since the world has heard what Keys has to offer by way of new music, but with “In Common” she serves up a resounding return.
