After some online chatter by music blogs asking if Stone Temple Pilots have auditioned Creed’s Scott Stapp as a potential lead singer, the band has taken to social media to debunk the rumor.

“Despite recent comments, Scott Stapp is not, nor has he ever been considered as the singer for STP,” the group tweeted.

The “evidence” was presented fairly convincingly earlier today.

Stone Temple Pilots have been auditioning new lead singers since the departure of Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) which was followed closely by the untimely death of original singer Scott Weiland.

Consequence of Sound reported that during a recent interview the Creed singer played coy, but hinted he had the gig. “I’m excited to be back out on the road and also been working on a new album with a new group of guys,” Stapp said. “Guys from some pretty well-known rock bands that you guys will know. I can’t really share the details about it, but there’s a lot of good things going on that I can’t tell you till later in June when we’ll be making the announcement. This other band I’m jamming with is it’s own band with its own band name.”

When asked directly if the band in question was STP, Stapp said “I can’t say man, I can’t say … I can’t confirm or deny.”
